Root Canal Therapy

With new technology at Brunswick Dental Clinic, root canal treatment is more comfortable, efficient and successful.

A root canal treatment is a treatment option for a severely damaged tooth. If the nerve of a tooth has been compromised due to bacteria or other causes, a root canal treatment can be performed in attempt to save the tooth.

Root canal treatment involves several visits to be completed, which involves removing the infected nerves and blood supplies, and fill the space with appropriate medication to prevent re-infection. During the procedure, we try to minimize your discomfort new technique and sufficient anesthesia. It takes time and patience, but we try to make sure that your tooth can be saved and will stay for a longer time.

Recent studies have shown that under the right conditions and with good maintenance, root canal treatment can have as a 93% success rate over 10 years.

Three Stage Process

Stage 1

The decay is removed and the infected canals are cleaned and dressed with antibacterial medication, so as to drain any infection. A temporary filling is placed on the tooth. It can last up to four weeks. This first stage will take approximately 45 minutes.

Stage 2

The root canals are re-cleaned, enlarged and shaped for a root filling later. Depending on the complexity of the case, this stage may take approximately 45 minutes from start to finish. Depending on the extend of remaining infection, this stage may have to be repeated.

Stage 3

The prepared root canals will be filled to prevent re-infection. This is the last stage of the root canal treatment and a definitive and stronger filling will be placed. Depending on the extent of remaining tooth structure, a crown may be recommended for a higher survival rate of the tooth.
