Teeth whitening consists of a thorough cleaning and polishing of the teeth beforehand. Your dental practitioner will use a intra-oral barrier to protect your gums before applying the whitening agent to the surface of your teeth. The product will be activated and left on the teeth for several minutes before being washed off with water. The procedure will be repeated a few times and usually take 75 minutes in total. Your result will vary according to the natural shade of your teeth and degree of discoloration, but it is normal for patients to experience a lightening of several color shades in a single visit or a gradual change over 2 weeks. Alternatively, you can choose to use take home whitening kit and whiten your teeth over a longer period of time, but the effect is usually quite limited due to a lower concentration of agent used.

It is normal to experience some sensitivity of your teeth following the whitening treatment. You may be instructed to avoid consuming highly pigmented beverages for at least 24 hours to prevent the teeth from becoming stained again. A tube of desensitising gel will also be provided to reduce the post-operative sensitivity.
